7 Years of Ordering Fortress Railing: 5 Mistakes That Cost Me $4,800 (So Yours Don't Have To)

If you're ordering Fortress railing for the first time, here's the one thing I'd tell you before anything else: verify post spacing and cable run lengths for the exact product line you're ordering, not for "railing" in general. Fortress Axis aluminum railing and Fortress cable railing have different requirements, and assuming they're the same is the most expensive mistake you can make.

I learned this the hard way. In 2022, I placed a $3,200 order for a deck project using Fortress cable railing. I measured post spacing the same way I had for our previous Fortress Axis jobs. If you order the exact distance between posts, the cable physically cannot reach through the post hole and into the tensioning hardware. Here's something vendors won't tell you: the quoted package price for Fortress railing often includes the posts, rails, and infill—but not necessarily the post bases or mounting hardware. You have to spec those separately.

We discovered this on a 2022 job with 27 posts. The order arrived, and the crew asked where the bases were. I checked the quote again. Not there. I had to place a separate order for surface-mount bases, which cost extra and took an extra week to ship. The client wasn't thrilled, and honestly, they shouldn't have been—it was an avoidable issue on our end. (Note to self: verify the quote includes every component before sending it to the client.)

Mistake #5: Not Walking the Job Site Before Ordering

This one is less about the product and more about how we work. I used to order from the drawings alone. On one project in 2024, the drawings showed a 32-foot railing run, but the actual framing on site had shifted 4 inches by the time we ordered. The railing sections arrived, and the first section didn't fit the span. We had to return two sections and order replacements at a different length.

Wait—When Should You NOT Use Fortress Railing?

I've spent this whole article telling you to order carefully. Let me be equally honest about when this product isn't the right choice, because it's not always.

If your project has tight-radius curved layouts, cable railing and rigid aluminum sections are going to be a headache. Fortress products are designed for straight runs and mild angles. For a circular staircase or a sweeping curved balcony, a custom-fabricated railing system is probably a better fit.

If the budget is genuinely tiny, aluminum railing is not the cheapest option. It's a premium product. A basic steel railing or wood railing will likely be less expensive up front. Fortress makes sense when the client values low maintenance, clean lines, and longevity—not when the only criterion is the lowest bid.

And if the existing framing can't support the post loads required by code (this comes up in retrofits a lot), you'll face structural modifications that can add significant cost. In that case, it's worth working with a structural engineer before committing to a specific railing system.

I'd say Fortress is the right call for 80% of the residential deck and balcony projects we do. But that other 20%? It's better to be honest with the client upfront than to force a square peg into a round hole. (Trust me on that one—I've been both the peg and the hole.)
