Fortress Railing Products: A 6-Point Quality Checklist Before You Install

Check 1: Compare the Order to the Actual Part Number

That means checking:

  • Material: aluminum, steel, cable, glass, or iron
  • Finish color and coating spec

Check 2: Dimension and Wall Thickness

Once the part number matches, check actual dimensions. Tape measure, caliper, micrometer. Yes, every time. I've seen tubular rail lengths delivered 1/4" longer than the PO because a saw operator "corrected" the cut without updating the work order.

Most common errors:

  • Post height off by more than 1/8"
  • Top rail length not matching the layout
  • Welded bracket location flipped from left to right
  • Wall thickness below spec on aluminum extrusions

For aluminum extrusions, ASTM B221 is the standard reference for tolerances. But your project's drawing may require tighter numbers, so verify current revisions and compare to the submittal. A 1/16" might not sound like much, but it's kinda the difference between a clean install and a shim job. I do not care how impressive the sample board looks; dimensions are where prevention starts.

Check 3: Finish and Coating

Powder-coated and anodized finishes hide a lot of problems at a glance. I run a thumb over each post on a sample angle, look for chips, orange peel, and dull spots, and check that color is consistent across the batch.

For exterior aluminum, AAMA 2604 is the common specification for powder coating. It includes adhesion and weathering tests. But the certificate only matters if the actual coated thickness matches the spec. I use a coating thickness gauge when I'm not sure.

What often gets missed: fasteners. A beautiful black aluminum post with shiny zinc-plated bolts looks wrong on the job site. Specify the fastener finish too.

Spec references here were current as of early 2025. Standards get revised, so verify the current edition.

Check 4: Connectors, Brackets, and Loose Parts

This is the step most people ignore, because it's more interesting to check the long shiny rails than the box of small parts. But missing or wrong connectors cause more install delays than a damaged post.

Lay out every box's packing list. Count part numbers, not boxes. I once opened a pallet of Fortress railing products and found the top rails, posts, and infills all correct—but the post base adapters were from a different series. They looked almost identical. They didn't fit.

Check that all fasteners are the specified grade. For outdoor stainless, 304 is common, 316 is more corrosion-resistant in coastal areas. Most people don't specify; then they wonder why the screws rust.
