Most Railing Failures Start Before the Railing Arrives
Here's my unpopular opinion: a Fortress railing system is rarely the weakest part of a railing project. I've handled Fortress railing projects since 2018, and I've made enough expensive mistakes to know the difference. In the past seven years, I've paid for about $14,000 in rework that I originally blamed on someone else. Looking back, almost every callback traced back to the same thing: I focused on the product and not on the surface, framing, or code detail it had to connect to.
Before you think I'm just repeating a slogan, let me show you why this matters. On paper, a railing order is simple. Posts, brackets, glass, and fittings show up. The installation looks clear. Then the job site shows up, and that's where assumptions collapse.
This pattern also shows up in simpler home products. A foil shaver can be well-reviewed and still frustrate if the buyer never plans for replacement foils. A shower head with hose can look perfect but fail to make anyone happy if the existing plumbing is not compatible. And when someone asks how to clean baseboard heaters, the issue is usually not the heater brand. It's dust and airflow around the fins. The pattern is the same: visible features get attention, hidden connections get ignored.
If you ask me, every contractor should spend less time comparing railing profiles and more time asking one question: What is this railing attached to, and who verified it? That question would have saved me three of my most embarrassing installs.
The First Expensive Lesson: The Ground Is Part of the Railing
In November 2020, I took on a Fortress stair railing installation on a back porch. The old stair rail felt loose, and the homeowner wanted something stronger. I got the measurements, ordered the material, and felt good about the two-day schedule.
On the first day, I found the problem I should have found during the estimate. The landing had been resurfaced with composite boards, but the framing underneath had no solid blocking where the lower railing post had to attach. My first thought was to use longer lag screws and hope the deck board would distribute the load. That was not a structural plan. It was optimism.
A few weeks later, the post had a small amount of movement. Enough to feel wrong when a person grabbed it. We had to open the landing, add solid blocking between the joists, close the access, and reinstall the post. That mistake added roughly $1,400 in labor and materials to a small project. Not one railing component was defective. The product was fine. The support under it wasn't.
Now, before any Fortress stair railing installation, my first question is about the exact mounting point, not the rail height or color. Where will the post land, and what is underneath the finished surface? If I haven't seen it, I don't promise a date.
Squareness Matters More Than the Glass
Fortress glass railing taught me the second expensive lesson. In 2022, I ordered a run of Fortress glass railing for an upper terrace. The lengths looked right. I measured the openings between posts and specified the glass panels based on those measurements.
What I didn't check was plumb. One of the end posts leaned outward by nearly 3/8 inch. It wasn't easy to see by eye, but glass doesn't care about what looks right. Tempered glass panels have fixed 90-degree corners. When we tried to set the panels, the opening wasn't a rectangle. The panels didn't fit without pressure. And glass is one material you cannot trim on site.
The result was two replacement panels, a two-week wait, and a conversation with the client that I still remember. That order cost me about $2,100 in unplanned material and express shipping.
The question everyone asks about Fortress glass railing is whether the glass is strong enough. That's the wrong question in my experience. The right question is whether the posts and base brackets are square, level, and rigid enough for the glass. If the structure supporting the glass moves, the product can't fix it.
Code Questions Are Site Questions
I also see buyers get confused by code compliance. They ask, 'Is this Fortress railing code compliant?' I understand the question, but the answer depends on where the railing goes.
For residential work, most local jurisdictions adopt a version of the International Residential Code. For many commercial projects, the starting point is the International Building Code. In both cases, local amendments can change the numbers. Guard height is usually measured from the finished walking surface or stair nosing. If you measure from old flooring, or if you replace the flooring after installation, the official measurement can change.
I'm not a code expert in every jurisdiction. I don't pretend to be. But I know enough to ask for the permit requirement and the measurement point before I install. An educated customer is not annoying. They ask better questions and make faster decisions.

I used to be the person who said, 'We'll handle it on site.' It sounded confident. It was not confidence. It was a lack of preparation.
In 2023, my team missed a 1/2-inch misalignment because we assumed an existing wall was plumb. The customer asked why the top rail didn't line up with the post. I had no good answer. We disassembled and fixed it. That was the moment I started a simple pre-installation checklist. In the last eighteen months, that checklist has caught 19 problems before they became callbacks.
I am not saying every Fortress railing job needs an engineering report. Most projects do not. But every project needs one person responsible for the interface between the railing and the building. That person should know where the post anchors land, what material is below them, and whether the opening can hold square glass.
Educated Customers Aren't Difficult Customers
This is why I keep writing explanations for my clients. I'd rather spend 10 minutes explaining mounting surfaces, code measurements, and glass tolerance than deal with mismatched expectations later. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. The customer who asks 'What happens if that post hits a joist?' is not trying to make my life harder. They are doing half my quality-control job.
So here is my closing opinion: The next time you compare Fortress railing products, consider style, finish, and design. All of that matters. Then spend the same amount of time looking at the place where the railing will live. Check the structure. Check the measurements. Check the code. Great railing deserves a great interface.
