This Checklist Is for Anyone Buying a Fortress Railing System
Here's the thing: railing is a product people touch. They grip it, lean on it, slide their hand along it. And in my job, I'm the one who signs off on every Fortress steel railing order before it ships. Roughly 400 unique orders a year. I rejected about 6% of first deliveries in Q1 2024. It wasn't the big stuff. It was the details.
Think about white kitchen cabinets. In the showroom, they all look white. But when you open a drawer, the difference is in the slides, the joinery, the finish thickness. Railing works the same way. Or take a shower valve. The trim plate is what you see, but the cartridge and valve body are what make it last. The same logic applies to a Fortress railing system: what you can't see at first glance is where the quality lives.
Below is the exact checklist I use before approving a railing order. It's written for contractors, dealers, and homeowners buying steel railing for a project. Six steps. Skip one and you're guessing.
Step 1: Confirm What You're Actually Buying
Before you talk finishes or aesthetics, ask for the material spec. Is the rail 6061-T6 aluminum or 6063-T5? If it's steel, is it hot-dip galvanized before coating? What's the powder coat thickness target? If they claim outdoor-grade, ask for the ASTM B117 salt-spray test report.
You'd be surprised how many orders are placed without those details in writing. (Not that every supplier will know what you're asking for—that's a red flag in itself.)
Checkpoint: Get the material cert and finish spec in the purchase order before you commit. No document, no order.
Step 2: Run Your Hand Over Every Joint
A railing joint is the seam where one section meets another—at a post, a sleeve, or a weld. The quickest way to test it is to roll your palm across the seam. If your hand catches, a customer's hand will catch too.
Some installers ask me how to roll a joint that's invisible. The honest answer: you don't roll it. You align it. The two sections need to meet flat, with a consistent gap. Anything more than 1/16 inch is visible from a distance. A raised lip the thickness of a dime is unacceptable.
Checkpoint: Check every transition point on the sample or installed run. Run your fingernail across the seam. If it clicks, it's a deal-breaker.
Step 3: Audit the Hardware
The rail might look great, but the brackets, posts, and bolts are what hold the whole thing together. For Fortress steel railing, the connectors should be steel or stainless—not zinc-plated bits that will corrode in two winters.
Torque specs matter, too. A bolt that's under-torqued will rattle. One that's over-torqued will strip. And here's the step most people ignore: check whether the system has expansion joints built in for long runs. Steel and aluminum move with temperature. Without a designed expansion gap, joints will shift over time. That's a hidden failure, but it's the one you'll be fixing later.
Checkpoint: Ask for the connection hardware spec sheet. Confirm expansion gaps are part of the system design, not an afterthought.
Step 4: Do a Finish Audit, Not a Look-Over
Powder coat on steel should be in the ballpark of 2-4 mils. If you have a coating thickness gauge, use it. If not, focus on the corners and edges—that's where coating always runs thin.
Remember the white kitchen cabinets analogy. A cabinet can look white in the showroom and look cheap in real light because the edge coverage is thin. Same with railing. A steel post with light corner coverage will rust early, and the first rust spot is a brand problem.
Checkpoint: Inspect every cut edge, weld, and drilled hole. Those are the first places finish fails.
Step 5: Load-Test the Installed Section
Once a railing is installed, push sideways on the top rail at mid-span. A solid system shouldn't flex more than about half an inch under hand pressure. Lean on a joint. Put weight on the post. Listen for clicks.
I've heard railings click when someone just glances at them. (Not that the homeowner ever notices—until the inspector does.)
Checkpoint: If a railing moves, squeaks, or clicks under normal use, it will fail. Period.
Step 6: Verify the Whole System Works Together
Modular railing seems simple: pick posts, rail, brackets, done. But not every component in a product line works with every other. With Fortress railing, you need to confirm the system compatibility before ordering, not at the job site.
In Q1 2024, we rejected a batch of 400 posts because the bracket mounting holes were drilled for the old template. The parts were all Fortress. But they weren't all one system. Compatibility is not a given.
Checkpoint: Verify that the posts, brackets, rail lengths, and any glass or cable infill are designed to go together. Get the system part number, not just the individual part names.
Common Mistakes That Turn Into Rework
Here are the three mistakes I see most often—and I'm the guy who sees the returns.
- Only checking visible welds. The hidden connections are where the trouble lives. Pull the drawing, inspect the attachment points, and don't skip the underside.
- Assuming 'Fortress' means uniform. The brand is consistent, but product lines change. Always confirm the current system spec.
- Accepting a 'close enough' finish sample. I still kick myself for approving one once. Production came off visibly thinner. We caught it before shipping, but redoing 8,000 units in storage cost us a $22,000 redo and delayed a launch. Close enough isn't a spec.
Look, I'm not saying quality is the only thing that matters. Price matters. Lead time matters. But the railing is the handshake of a building project. When a client walks along a balcony, they feel the joint, see the finish, and lean on the post. If any of those feel wrong, they will assume the rest of the project is wrong too.
