I coordinate emergency orders for a building-supply company that carries Fortress railing products. Most people don't realize that job exists until a railing order falls behind a deadline and the whole deck is waiting on it. That is where I come in. Over the past two years, I've handled 200+ expedited deliveries, most of them deck railing and cable railing projects that needed to happen in days, not weeks.
Here is my opinion, and I'll state it plainly: on any project with a hard deadline, a Fortress railing system beats custom site-built railing almost every time. Custom work can be excellent. But custom fabrication and a compressed schedule are a bad match.
Why do I hold that view? Because railing failures are usually schedule failures before they are product failures.
Custom fabrication has too many handoffs
A custom railing order has to move through a field visit, a shop drawing, an approval, a fabrication slot, delivery and a final fit-up. Each step creates room for delay. If the field measurement is off, if the finish doesn't match, or if the shop is booked for the next two weeks, the calendar slips. I'm not saying custom shops are careless. I'm saying a one-off process is inherently less predictable.
A pre-engineered railing system removes some of those variables. The Fortress railing system is not a bag of random parts; the posts, brackets, rails and infills are designed as a family. Hole patterns are fixed. Components are cut to consistent lengths. The installer still needs to measure and set anchors, but they are not re-engineering the connection on a ladder.
The same logic applies to Fortress deck railing, cable railing and glass railing. Fewer field decisions mean fewer field mistakes, and fewer field mistakes mean shorter lead times.
The call that made me stop quoting custom first
In March 2024, a general contractor called at 4 p.m. with a railing inspection scheduled for Friday morning. A custom metal shop had promised delivery by Thursday, then changed its answer to next week. He asked what we had in stock.

The net installed cost is the only number that matters
A frequently searched question is 'how much do door dashers make.' The headline answers show a per-order amount. But the more useful answer is how much is left after gas, downtime, unpaid waiting and wear on the car. Railing pricing works almost the same way.
The list price of a railing product is the gross number. The net installed cost is the product, plus freight, plus waiting time, plus the cost of a second visit if something doesn't fit. When a custom quote looks $400 less than the system quote, it is easy to miss that the custom option also comes with drawing reviews, fabrication lead time and potential field rework.
On a 60-foot deck, an extra $400 for a Fortress railing system is noise compared with the cost of missing a closing date. On an easy schedule, custom can be fine. In an emergency, the net number shifts hard toward the system.
What a glass cutter can't fix
One of the most dangerous emergency fixes I see involves glass railing. A homeowner gets a panel that is the wrong size and assumes that someone with a glass cutter can trim it. That assumption is wrong when the glass has been tempered.
A glass cutter is used in the factory on annealed glass, before tempering. Once glass goes through the tempering process, it cannot be cut or reshaped. Trying to score it with a glass cutter creates a damaged edge or stress point. It doesn't turn a wrong-sized pane into a custom-fit panel. It turns a usable safety product into a liability.
That is why a modular Fortress glass railing system treats glass as a system component. The panel is ordered in the specified size, delivered ready to install and replaced if it is wrong. That's less dramatic than a site fix, but it is the answer that protects the people standing next to it.
The shower niche lesson
Sometimes the railing problem doesn't start at the railing. In June 2024, a general contractor lost two days because his tile crew had to rebuild a shower niche that was framed out of square. The bathroom delay didn't move the deadline. It landed on the exterior deck railing.
He called me needing a Fortress deck railing package in four days. A custom fabricator in his area was three weeks out. The modular package was already stocked, so we arranged delivery for the next morning and the deck stayed on schedule.
Custom still has a place
I don't want to overstate the case. On a curved stair, an ornamental iron detail, or a structural glass condition, a one-off engineering solution may be the right answer. I'm not a structural engineer, so I don't guess on those. And I'm not going to tell you that a standardized railing system belongs on every custom home.
But many deck railing projects do not need sculptural one-offs. They need code-compliant, solid, installable products that show up when they are supposed to show up.
Code is part of the calculation too. As of the 2021 International Residential Code, most residential deck guards are required to be at least 36 inches high; for most commercial projects under the IBC, the minimum is 42 inches above the walking surface. Local amendments can change those numbers, so verify with your local building department before making a final call.
So this is where I land. If a project has months of schedule and the design calls for custom detail, custom railing deserves consideration. If the schedule is measured in hours, the lower-risk choice is an engineered Fortress railing system. It is stocked. It is designed for predictable assembly. It takes the field decisions off the table.
You can tell me I'm biased. I've watched too many projects wait on fabricated rail that promised a date and missed it. The system doesn't have to be perfect. It has to be consistent. And in an emergency, consistency wins. Period.
