I'll start with an opinion that surprises clients: The railing is not the riskiest part of a residential pool project. The gate is.
In 2019, I was installing an aluminum railing system around a residential pool. The homeowner chose Fortress Railing products because the system arrives ready to assemble, doesn't need on-site welding, and the finish looks clean. We used fortress stair railing components for the steps, cable railing for the long run, and a gate panel at the entry point. Then the gate turned a two-week job into a four-week lesson in patience.

I'm not a railing engineer. I'm the person who handles railing orders, templates, and installation for custom residential projects. I've made enough mistakes to know where the real pitfalls hide. My first pool gate failure cost about $1,847 in replacement parts, extra site time, and rework—plus the quiet sting of a failed inspection.
That experience taught me something important: buying quality railing components doesn't automatically create a code-compliant gate.
Mistake #1: I Chose the Latch Like It Was a Lightbulb
I picked a standard latch from the hardware aisle. It said 'self-latching' on the box, and it looked like every other gate latch I had used. What could go wrong?
Plenty. The Fortress gate frame is an extruded aluminum system with tight tolerances, and a generic latch doesn't necessarily match that profile. On site, the strike plate didn't align with the frame opening. When the gate swung closed, the latch body hit the lip of the extrusion before the bolt could seat. I shimmed it, adjusted it, and—yes—slightly bent the strike plate to make it work. It still didn't latch consistently.
An inconsistent latch around a pool is not a small defect. The gate closed most of the time, but about one swing in eight would bounce. That was the reason the inspector failed us.
Looking back, I should have confirmed gate hardware compatibility before placing the order. At the time, I assumed a latch is a latch. It isn't.
Mistake #2: The Gate Was Exactly As Wide As the Opening
This mistake is embarrassing because it's simple geometry.
I measured the clear distance between the installed gate posts at 36 inches. Then I ordered a 36-inch gate panel. That sounds logical, but a gate that is exactly as wide as its opening leaves no room for hinge and latch clearance. I kept telling myself a tighter fit would feel stronger. Wrong. The gate bound on the hinge side, and on the latch side there wasn't a consistent gap for the mechanism to work. Rework took another day and a fresh set of gate parts.
What I learned: the gate leaf size is not the same as the opening size. You have to subtract the space taken up by the hinge and latch hardware. The correct setup is usually in the manufacturer's install instructions—if you take the time to read that page before you order.
Mistake #3: I Underestimated the Pool Environment
The first latch I used was powder-coated steel because it matched the black railing. It looked right at first. The problem is that a pool gate lives in a harsh microclimate. Chlorine, sunscreen, and water mist settle on the hardware every week. If the project includes an outdoor shower near the pool, the exposure is even worse. Within a season, the coating began to break down and the latch spring felt gritty. It wasn't a code failure at first, but it would have become one.
On the redo, I specified marine-grade stainless steel hardware. I now default to corrosion-resistant materials around pools, not just 'outdoor-rated' hardware.
The Objection I Usually Get
I understand why someone would say, 'A complete railing kit should include the gate latch, and it should just work.'
It would be nice if that were true. But railing kits and pool gate code are two different design languages. Gate code is about protecting children from drowning. Railing code is about structural support and fall protection. Sometimes the local building department adds specific gate requirements that vary by city. A railing manufacturer can't predict every local amendment, and a generic latch isn't built around a specific aluminum extrusion.
That's not a flaw in the product. It's a reason to plan the gate as carefully as you plan the railing height.

The more I work with all kinds of building products, the more I notice the same pattern. A product can be excellent, but the details around it determine whether the result works.
If a client asks me how to set up a home office, I don't start with monitors. I ask about room dimensions, outlet locations, desk depth, and where the light comes from. The space decides which equipment will work, not the other way around.
The same is true for a frameless shower door. The glass can be stunning, but the door leaks if the hinges and the alignment of the fixed panel aren't right. An outdoor shower can be designed beautifully, too, but if you don't respect the amount of water hitting nearby materials, you'll eventually deal with corrosion or water damage.
For railing, I now look at the full system: rail, posts, stair transitions, gate hardware, and the environment around it.
My Gate Checklist Now
Before I order a gate for a pool area, I run through this checklist:
- Check the current local code for pool gate latch and release requirements.
- Measure the actual opening between installed posts—not the width on the plan.
- Confirm that the hinge and latch are made for the specific gate frame profile.
- Use corrosion-resistant materials if the gate will be exposed to pool chemicals or an outdoor shower splash zone.
- Test the gate from fully open and fully closed positions at least ten times before requesting an inspection.
That last step sounds simple, but it would have saved me from my first failed inspection. When I ran the test after the rework, the gate clicked cleanly every time. There's something satisfying about that click after weeks of frustration.
My Opinion Hasn't Changed
I still recommend Fortress Railing products for a lot of projects. The aluminum railing and stair components are strong, and the installation system is manageable. But I no longer view a gate as a minor detail. The railing creates the boundary; the gate controls the risk.
If you're building a railing around a pool, take the gate as seriously as the rest of the design. Choose solid products, then pay attention to the small pieces that connect them. That's not over-engineering. It's just respect for what a gate has to do—and for the cost of getting it wrong.
